Al Mundy’s Memoirs

I arrived in OSAN in Oct of 1986 and left in Oct of 1987.  I was an Airman First Class (A1C).

Al KoreaMy job there was as a COMSEC ANALYST (209×0) and I worked on Hill 170.  This was just a few years after the big fuel tank explosion and I recall walking around the base of the exploded tanks.  Cool.

So I have lots of little memories about Osan.

–Do Hap Sool.  I earned my 2nd black belt here with SaBuNim as instructor.  We did a lot of hiking trips to places I can't recall now.  One time we ascended a mountain and it snowed like the dickens on the top and we all slid down on our coats.  Song Ri was the mountain I think.

–Hill 170.  I drove a truck and parked it at the top.  It popped out of park and rolled down into another vehicle also parked.  Had fun with the SP's filling out the accident paper work.  Driver – None.  Driver other vehicle – None.

–Remember the deep fried "stuff" you could buy in Songtan?  Probably not too good health-wise but I enjoyed it immensely.  I recall one time they found classified documents as the wrapping paper for these.  I think it was called Yakimondu.

–And of course there were the video game arcades that you could play for a won coin and get about 30 plays for a dollar.  I was 20 at the time so that sort of thing was attractive in lieu of endless beer parties.
